No, I don’t have exciting news like there’s a new breed of flu shots that also plumps your skin or aids in skin hydration (though I think scientists should get right on that). The experts say the best way to prevent contracting the flu is by washing your hands frequently and long enough to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Right… So first of all I annoyed the shit out of myself when I tried this method and second of all my hands were getting dry and chapped. What I needed was an incentive to wash my hands. Sure enough, while browsing NEST Fragrance products at Neiman Marcus last week I smelled their Wasabi Pear Liquid Hand Soap ($22) and instantly fell in love with the crisp, tart scent that combines “Anjou pear and fresh ozonic watery notes infused with the essence of wasabi.”
Once I started washing with the NEST soap I immediately noticed that I didn’t need much product (not even half a pump) so it justified me spending more than $5 on hand soap knowing it will probably last several months. And, I didn’t need to sing some irritating song twice. All I had to do was slowly lather my hands, enveloping my senses in the intoxicating scents. The liquid soap also didn’t leave my hands dry since instead of using harsh detergents, NEST uses natural plant extracts to both clean and nourish. Not only does this soap make me 100% addicted to washing my hands but the smell lingers which makes me look like a freak in public places since I’m constantly sniffing my hands. Oh, and by the way the soap comes in 5 other delicious scents! Get on it!Posted by janna

Chase away the January drearies by giving yourself a spa treatment at home. Tune into My Beauty Binge this week to hear how you can transform a simple shower or a spare half hour into a mini-escape that’s also much needed by your skin. The harsh winter weather and the heater’s blaring dry air means we should be regularly exfoliating and bumping up the moisture levels. What better excuse for some “me” time?

You can stop stressing now about having the cutest gift for your Secret Santa — throw a few BonBliss Moisturizing Body Truffles ($3) in a mesh bag or arrange them in a little box to keep up the candy theme (warning: this is not advisable if your gift receiver is not the sharpest eyeliner in the makeup kit. The last thing you need is a coworker complaining of an achy belly after eating one of these bad boys). These single-use body scrubs are PERFECT for traveling or to pop in your gym bag for a mini-spa experience. I personally use one truffle a week, breaking off and crumbling a chunk at a time and scrubbing different areas of my body. BonBliss also sells tins of Scrubs-2-Go ($9.95) which are single-use scrubs (packed like little candies of course) that exfoliate and moisturize hands or small areas like elbows and knees. Perfect for the harsh winter cold!
All of these adorable little confections are made in small batches from natural butters and oils (which means if you leave them on the shelf they could change color) and are free of Parabens, Phthalates, and Sulfates. I wish I could advise you on which delicious flavor to choose but I’m obsessed with so many of the yummy scents it’s hard to pick just one! If you’re going to force me, fine, my top 3 flavors are Bergamont & Neroli, Lemony Yuzu, and Orange Sherbet. So indulge away! The best part? BonBliss is offering a 20% discount exclusively to Beauty Binge readers! Just enter promo code: BINGE.Posted by janna Tags Body, BonBliss, Exfoliating, Gift Ideas
We all know I’m spoiled… I get tons of products sent to me by publicists for consideration. I test them all — hating some, liking others, and coveting a select few. When I say “covet” we’re talking about products that will permanently become part of my personal regimen and be re-bought again and again. People always ask me, “What are your favorite products?” Here’s a good place to start:
1. Kate Somerville ‘Dermal Quench Liquid Lift’ Advanced Wrinkle Treatment ($95): I’m a huge fan of in-spa oxygen facials and this treatment seems to mimic the instant smoothing effects of an oxygen facial and still manages to reduce redness and fine lines over-time. I had two consistent dry patches on my cheeks that were softer after Day 1. It’s also perfect for pre-event regimens since it has temporary wrinkle-relaxing PFC- carriers to relax facial muscles. It takes a lot for me to wax poetic about body care products. Don’t get me wrong, I love the luxury of starting my day by using a potent body wash that envelops me in a delicious scent, but once I step out of the shower the aroma is soon forgotten. How can it compete with the forthcoming body cream and smorgasbord of skincare I slather on every morning? In this case, NEST Fragrances not only competed but conquered with their new Moss & Mint Body Wash ($28) and Body Cream ($32). I’m telling you I keep smelling my hand ever 30 seconds. And guess who else liked it? As soon as my husband walked in the room I shoved my arm in front of his face and after he took a long, deep whiff he nodded and proclaimed, “you smell delicious, honey.” Trust me when I say he’s not saying that to placate me. There have been plenty of occasions when I’m testing products that he physically leaves the room from oncoming headaches.
There is just something soooo intoxicating about the Moss & Mint. It reminds me of the smells of Muir Woods meets an early Spring apple orchard. Yum. These paraben-free products aren’t just a pretty scent — both the body wash and body cream are filled with hydrating and protecting powerhouse ingredients like aloe, water-soluble rice bran oil and shea butter.

It takes a lot for me to get excited about hand sanitizers, but the Bath & Body Works Freshly Picked PocketBacs are adorbs and smell AMAZING! These little gems look and smell like candy and don’t dry out my hands as much as a typical hand sanitizer. Full disclosure, they do contain alcohol, but I swear you don’t smell it or feel it. Once you use it on your hands, all that remains is the delicious lingering aroma (and germ-free hands of course).
They are $1.50 a pop, but Bath & Body Works is running a special right now that you can buy 5 for $5 so you can get a different flavor to brighten up each work day. I’m personally addicted to Cilantro Peach and Freshly Picked Peaches. Yum!Posted by janna Tags Bath & Body Works, Hand Sanitizer
The final dark chapter in my “Weathering the Cold” series addresses frizzy, static hair and cracked, rough hands. Uplifting, yes?
Regardless of your hair texture, the harsh, cold conditions outside mixed with the bone-dry indoor heat are a molotov cocktail of damage. You have to apply the same logic as treating your face and body to your hair — prevent and protect!
Sleep with a Humidifier. Go for short warm (not hot) showers. Wear a cashmere hat (I know it sounds pretentious, but wool absorbs the moisture your hair needs. There’s simply not enough to go round.). Go easy on the straightening, curling, blowing out, etc. Your hair is going through a vulnerable stage! Also, take Omega-3 fish oil pills. They will help prevent hair damage as well as skin damage (and it has tons of other health benefits!).
Start at the beginning… Before you even shampoo, try a pre-shampoo oil treatment once a week like Phyto Huile d’Ales Pre-Shampoo Intense Hydrating Oil Treatment, especially if you color-treat. Arm yourself with multiple hydrating shampoos and conditioners (it’s true what you’ve heard… if you use the same products every day they build-up and lose their effectiveness). In my shower you will find everything from L’Oreal Paris EverSleek Repairative Smoothing Shampoo and Pantene Pro-V Medium-thick Hair Solutions Frizzy to Smooth Conditioner to Shu Uemura Silk Bloom Restorative Conditioner for Damaged Hair and It’s a 10 Miracle Moisture Conditioner.
Moving onto hands… What can I say? Let’s face it, when that winter chill hits you’ll be like Sisyphus trying to keep your hands soft and hydrated. Because it’s cold and flu season you’re going to be washing your hands even more than usual and you SHOULD be applying hand cream after every time you wash. So by the end of day, even though you’ve moisturized your hands more than a dozen times, your hands will feel like you haven’t applied cream since last Christmas. The constant washing is exacerbated by the dry air outside and inside, leaving your hands feeling like you’ve been working in the fields. So what can you do?
The obvious! Be armed with hand creams by your desk, in your handbag, in your car, by your nightstand. Make it your religion that every time you wash you moisturize. I personally use the Bliss Blood Orange + White Pepper Hand Cream because it’s nice and thick and smells divine. At night though I use good ole’ Vaseline to coat my hands and then I put on Bliss Glamour Gloves. These really work miracles. They are lined with this magic gel that seems to penetrate the Vaseline into my skin. The difference the next morning is palpable. But then of course I start washing my hands and I become Sisyphus pushing the boulder once again…
Okay, enough about the coming winter months. I just can’t put myself through this. The cold is misery and I just want to talk about fun stuff now, okay? So let’s flip the switch and talk about the holidays. The holidays! Make sure you make this site a favorite for your loved ones because I assure you I will be churning out my gluttonous wish list from now until Christmas, and my list is long and distinguished.
