Oscars Special: Ten Most Beautiful and Iconic Hair & Makeup Looks of All Time

Since obviously all these looks are timeless, I thought I would bring this post back to life in homage of the Oscars tomorrow. Enjoy!

In honor of the Oscars tomorrow, as a huge movie buff, I thought I would count down the ten most beautiful and iconic hair and makeup looks of all time. My original thinking was I would include at least one trendsetting movie star from each decade  — Madonna from Desperately Seeking Susan(1985), Julie Roberts from Pretty Woman (1990), Rooney Mara from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), etc. But when I started making my list I realized I just couldn’t spare  a spot for these women.  I had to make my decisions based solely on beauty and influence, and find the movies that made the actresses into style icons.

Which of these looks are your favorite? Did I miss anyone?

Makeup Tutorial: How To Steal Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Carpet Look

We all know Oscar Nominee Jennifer Lawrence knows how to rock a red carpet since she transformed every red carpet into a runway  during her Hunger Games media tour.  She has not disappointed this award season especially considering that for most of the season Jennifer (yes, we’re obviously on a first name basis) should have been in bed or in the hospital rather than strutting her stuff on the red carpet since she was plagued with illness for most of the award shows.  You would never know she even had a sniffle based on her photos — every look was classic and flawless.  Obviously the only way to pay true homage to The Girl on Fire leading up to her big night is to recreate one of her best red carpet looks.  I chose her SAG Awards look:

First I want to introduce and thank our lovely model, Maghan McDowell, a vey talented writer who currently covers Style and Living for the San Francisco Chronicle. She was very patient with my non-makeup artist methods and didn’t bat an eyelash when I had to clean up the side of her face because I had managed to drag coral makeup (don’t ask; I was experimenting) all over her cheek and chin.

Red Carpet Beauty Regurgitation (I mean Recap) from the SAG Awards

I’m not going to spend too much on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet because, um, it’s the Screen Actors Guild Awards.  Enough said. BUT since the glitterati bothered getting all dolled up (thank GOD that frightful “no makeup” trend didn’t poison the SAG awards red carpet) I  want to share a few of my favorite looks to both love and hate on.  (And yes, for those of you who were wondering… Despite my past red carpet hate fests, I am capable of recognizing beauty when I see it.  I mean it’s not my fault if the starlets show up to the red carpet looking like a nightmare. What do you want me to do? Lie? I think not.)

Freida Pinto: Obviously I’m going to start with perfection. Her makeup artist was smart enough to just let Freida’s gorgeous skin be the star.  I see warm tones on her eyelids and navy eyeliner on her lower lash line — something I wouldn’t have necessarily put together but it really works.  I love the bold natural brow but I probably would have added just a little more sheer color to her lip. And how adorable is her faux tucked-under bob? Totally changes her look and works with dress.

Celebrity Beauty Blind Item: Who is Taking Her Hair to Dangerous 80s Heights?

It’s time to be bitchy and figure out my Celebrity Beauty Blind Item! Guess which diva-slash-actress went on a morning show this week looking like she was promoting a remake of Working Girl?  We’re talking bangs at least 4 inches high and sprayed to the bejesus.  This diva is usually flawless in the beauty department so you can imagine how shocked I was when I saw this incriminating photo.  Aside from the sprayed to the sky bangs, her ends look like they’ve taken a beating from all the highlights and hot tools, making her hair appear dry and brittle.

What should she do? First of all, she needs to fire her hairstylist who could be stabbed in certain circles for trying to bring back the Staten Island 80s trend.  Judging by this pic of him (it’s a him, right?), he’s trying to recreate his own rockin’ coif on our Diva.  Second, our Diva needs to get herself a deep conditioning treatment at a salon. Third, she needs to follow up with a weekly mask like Phytocitrus Restructuring Mask for Color-Treated Hair ($38), which is perfect for treating overly-abused tresses.  I mean come on… you would think a woman who demands everything in a hotel be white before she steps foot would expect a bit more from her beauty team.

The Golden Globes 2013: A Hot Mess of Red Carpet Mayhem

Award season is in full swing and the starlets did not disappoint (for the most part) in bringing the glamour to the Golden Globes 2013 red carpet last night. Fifteen minutes into watching the red carpet coverage it was apparent that waves were going to be the biggest beauty trend. Some opted for loose, sexy romantic waves (a la Farrah Fawcett) like Claire Danes, Sarah Hyland, and Salma Hayek, while others went full-out Old Hollywood Glam like Connie Britton, Amy Adams, Rachel Weisz and Nicole Richie. Tons of red carpet beauties (Heidi Klum, Kelly Osborn, Jessica Alba, Isla Fisher, Megan Fox) decided to put a modern edge on the Old Glam look by sweeping the hair to one side. I also saw several lovely ladies sashaying at the opposite end of the spectrum with stick-straight locks like Kerry Washington, Stacy Keibler, Marion Cotillard, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Julianna Margulies, and Debra Messing (the latter two opting for structured ponytails).

The makeup trends were a bit more all over the place… We saw the sultry smoky eye (almost always a perfect fit for the red carpet) done in intense dark liners on the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Catherine McPhee and Claire Danes while Michelle Dockery, Amanda Sayfried, and Kerry Washington rocked a softer, more diffused smoky eye with browns and purples.  Unfortunately the “no makeup look” (also kindly called the “Fresh Face Look” by the media and not-so-kindly “The Emperor’s New Clothes” by me) reared its bland, boring head on the carpet last night, making victims Olivia Munn and Rosario Dawson look like they ran out of their rooms before the makeup artist had time to finish. Now I will say that Sienna Miller also sported the “no makeup look” but she’s so flawlessly gorgeous it worked.

NYX Curve: Perfect No-Mess Liquid Eyeliner (Seriously!)

If there’s one look I’m always striving to perfect it’s the perfect winged eye.  Since the early days when my grandma and I would religiously watch every Audrey Hepburn movie, I’ve always wanted to mimic that  ultra-sophisticated yet fun and sexy look.

I’ve tried every form of eyeliner — from kohl pencil to liquid to cake.  And even though a few makeup remover-soaked q-tips have always been able to save me from an all-out  “I just got back from Fight Club” look, it’s always been a messy, laborious process.  That is of course until I discovered NYX The Curve Liner ($14.99)

This ergonomically shaped liner with a curved grip zone for precise application makes perfecting any liquid liner look as easy as putting on lip gloss.  It has a felt tip that dispenses just the right amount of color which comes out dark and pigmented, and does not bleed nor feather!  REJOICE!

To create a winged eye it only took me one swipe along my lash line and then I changed my grip (angling it upwards) and drew my wing.  Voila! I’m Audrey!  (Okay, maybe not… but at least it looked perfect and took me about 30 seconds. I’ll take it!)

Celebrity Blind Beauty Item: Who is Taking the Bold Brows and Big Lashes Trends a Bit Too Literally?

Guess which former pop tartlet should start being a bit more “judge”-mental about the way her makeup looks on live TV?  Thanks to an overzealous makeup artist, this star’s face looks like a battleground between warring tar-coated tarantulas (her eyelashes) and tar-coated caterpillars (her eyebrows).  When I’m watching her show I can’t help but to be distracted by waiting for her to blink to see if her lashes will seal shut like venus flytraps or if her badly drawn brows are going to start bleeding down her face.

Let’s break down what she should be doing for her hot mess of a situation:

Tarantulashes: I’m sorry, but there are only two valid excuses for not having eyelash extensions 1. Can’t spare the cash 2. Super-sensitive watering eyes.  We know #1 isn’t a problem for her and judging by the amount of eye makeup she wears I’m assuming #2 isn’t an issue either.  She should get lash extensions on the top (I highly recommend Xtreme Lashes) and Lash Dip (It’s like a 2-week natural-looking mascara) or a lash tint on the bottom.  The gloppy mess on her lashes just isn’t okay. To learn more why I’m obsessed with lash extensions click here.

Warlock Brows:  I get that bold brows are in but let’s not be ridiculous. It looks like her makeup artist took a black kohl pencil and outlined slightly outside her entire brow area and then filled both shapes in solid with the pencil.  She looks like a cartoon villain.  What her makeup artist should have done — First choose a brow pencil like Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil ($22) that matches our tartlet’s brows.  Then angle the pencil 45° and lightly feather hair-length strokes through the brows (operative word being lightly).  Then set brows with a clear gel like Anastasia Brow Gel ($21). Voila!

Can you guess who our offending pop tartlet is?  Leave a comment or email me and I’ll tell you if you’re right!

Interview with Celebrity Makeup Artist Charlie Green: Part 2

I know I left you ladies hanging for Part 2 of my interview with the brilliant Charlie Green (click here to read Part 1), but A. I decided to be greedy and ask Charlie for a second interview (and she generously obliged!) B. you’ll get over it when you read the treasure trove of advice that Charlie bestowed:

Beauty Binge (BB): What risk SHOULD women be taking in makeup that most are not? And how can they easily achieve this?

Experiment! Be brave and try some color instead of safe neutrals… It’s only makeup and you can wash it off if you hate it; its not a tattoo! Take an afternoon cruising the makeup counters, checking out new trends and textures. Maybe try and have a couple of makeovers at the counters and don’t forget to take your photo on a cell phone to remember the techniques and tips the makeup artist gave you. You don’t need to recreate the whole look at home, but if you learned a technique or two then that’s major!

Celebrity Beauty Blind Item: Who Displayed a Blackheads Bonanza on the Red Carpet?

I love guessing blind items in the gossip rags, but why should the tabloids have all the fun?  If you see a celebrity commit a major beauty faux pas make sure you email me at janna@mybeautybinge.com so we can run it as a blind item and help the offending celeb fix the issue!

Which gorgeous starlet, famous for her unique multi-cultural looks, who got her big break on a popular late night “news” show and now is gracing every red carpet because of her role on Aaron Sorkin’s “news” show, showed up in red carpet close ups with a face covered in glaring blackheads??  When I say blackheads, I’m not talking about a sprinkle over the nose… Let’s put it this way, they were so big and black, completely blanketing her forehead, nose, cheeks and chin, at first I thought they were freckles!  Our starlet does in fact have some freckles but they’re tough to find in the oil fields. She also had an unhealthy dose of greasy shine to keep the blackheads company. GROSS!

So what should have our pretty starlet done prior to hitting the red carpet??
