Currently Loving: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Creme Compact SPF 20

That’s right. I made the big move to cream foundation by introducing Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Creme Compact SPF 20  ($45) into my regimen. For those of you who have read Beauty Binge from its infancy you know that a couple years ago I was reluctant to even wear foundation on a regular basis. I was under the delusion that I didn’t need foundation until Makeup Artist Maria Luxen gave me a shoulder shake and pointed out all the redness in my skin. To make a long story short (to read the long story and the review of the Amore Pacific foundation click here) shortly after my intervention I discovered the AMOREPACIFIC ‘Time Response Skin Renewal’ Foundation SPF 18 ($90) which was the perfect starter foundation with its light coverage, dewey finish, skin soothing ingredients, and SPF.

So what went wrong? Well, it takes a lot for me to admit this but I needed more coverage. There I said it. I noticed that it was taking me way too long to apply and blend the foundation, it still looked streaky when I was done, and I could still see redness underneath the makeup.  Now making the move from a sheer liquid to a cream compact is pretty dramatic (and luckily unnecessary) so you can imagine how excited I was when Laura Mercier sent me their Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Creme Compact SPF 20  ($45) in Blush. Instead of thick and heavy coverage like most creme compacts, this is the baby steps version providing light to medium (but buildable to heavy where you need it) coverage with the added benefit of providing hydration and SPF.

Now if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it twice… I don’t care if a product is a tinted moisturizer, a BB Cream, or a CC Cream, the only thing it should replace is your foundation. If the product has pigment, I assure you that you still need your regular SPF (Dermatologists recommend at least a half a teaspoon of SPF for your face; let’s hope you’re not applying that much foundation) and you most certainly still need your primer.  If you skip primer the pigment is going to settle into every pore and crease. Not pretty.  Even though this product is advertised as a “tinted moisturizer” I still use my daily moisturizer followed by primer and take the description to mean it’s going to be a lighter coverage than the standard foundation with added skin benefits.

Why I’m loving Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Creme Compact SPF 20:  First of all it takes under two minutes for me to swipe the sponge (included in the compact) over my face, seamlessly blending the foundation to a perfect natural-looking finish.  Then I double-dip the sponge to build a little extra coverage over the reddest areas of my skin.  The product blends beautifully and still makes my skin look healthy and dewey.  It also plays nice with my other products like gel and cream blushes, contour powder, concealer, etc. And of course the convenience of the compact cannot be beat. I just slip the compact in my little handbag and I can touch-up my makeup throughout the night.

Verdict: Winner!
