This summer I’ve found that just by adding a fun-colored eyeliner to my upper lash line I’ve created an instant “going out” look.  Keep in mind I have lash extensions, so you should follow with your favorite mascara.  To make sure your liner lasts the night, prime your eyelids first with concealer and/or a flesh or ivory-colored eye shadow like Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow Ivory  ($21). 

Let’s see some COLOR!!!

Green Eyeliner:

As you can see, Hayden Panettiere rocks this emerald eyeliner, making her green eyes glow. This color is perfect for both green and hazel eyes, but also makes blues eyes look more teal. I personally have dark blue eyes and I’ve been wearing the Palm Leaf (a forest green) of the Paul & Joe Las Palmas Eyeliner & Crayon Duo ($25), which makes my eyes look brighter and take on a more aqua hue.

For a bit more drama like January Jones, use a liquid green liner like MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Liner 4 Diamond Lagoon Green ($23) to make a thick winged eye, and then line the lower lash line with a shimmery green shadow like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Mildew ($18).

Purple Eyeliner:

This is one of those colors that flatters every eye — from the darkest brown to the lightest blue — purple looks good on all peepers!  Keri Russell applied a purple eyeliner pencil like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Pencil in Psychedelic Sister ($19) to both her upper and lower lash lines, and even lined her water line to really make this color pop! Notice that she left her lipstick neutral so that her eyes got all the attention.

For a bit more drama like Natalie Portman, try smoking the eyes with a light purple eye shadow like Purple Rose Shimmer from the palette Lancome Color Design 5 Shadow & Liner Palette Amethyst Glam ($49) by applying it along the upper lash line and blending upwards.  Then, use a flat liner brush to apply the shadow along the lower lash line and blend. Finally, use a purple eyeliner pencil to line your waterline. By the way, if you’re a whore for purple (yes you, Loni) then the Lancome palette will make your wildest purple dreams come true.

Navy Blue Eyeliner:

Navy definitely adds a more sophisticated vibe. To break the barriers of the standard black like Emma Stone, youu can create a thick winged liner with a navy liquid like Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Sabbath ($19).  Or, add a subtle pop of color by lining just your upper lashline with a navy eye pencil like MAKE UP FOR EVER Kohl Pencil Pearly Deep Blue ($17).

Teal Eyeliner:

Teal is another one of those colors that happens to look great on every eye color. I know you would think it would just make blue and green eyes pop but just look at Jessica Alba’s chocolatey brown eyes lined with a teal eyeliner… Gorg! I’m definitely seeing this as the color of summer.  So, whether you copy Jessica’s look by creating a thick soft line along your upper lash line with a shadow stick like NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Heat ($24) or create a fine line along your upper and lower lash lines with a teal pencil like Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner Peacock ($20), this will add the perfect amount of color to your summer look!

Hello, my lovelies! Please accept my apologies for being MIA this past week.  I was in LA at the E! offices the early part of the week and then I came home with a nasty cold. The only thing that can make me grumpier than being sick is being sick while being pregnant. I just rejoined the land of the living today and I’m ready to get back to beauty bingeing! I have some fun posts planned for the next couple weeks so make sure you check back!

I’m listing this past week’s E! Beauty Police columns. Keep in mind that even though the first half of each column is my snarky analysis, the second half is either a useful Beauty Bailout or Get the Look. Morning

1. I will hunt you down and cut your veil if you’re not using at least a nickel size dollop of sunscreen every morning.  The sun instantly dehydrates your skin, enlarges pores, and emphasizes wrinkles.  So don’t  think “Oh, I’ll just get a little color for the wedding and pay the price later.” Bitch, you’re going to pay the price when your groom lifts up the veil to see a leather raisin. I don’t want to hear any excuses either.  I can assure you my skin is a bigger drama queen and I use COOLA – Face SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Unscented Matte Tint ($36) every morning after my moisturizer and my makeup goes on beautifully.  Hint: If you’re using a chemical sunscreen, make sure you apply it first thing after you wash your face.  If you’re using a mineral sunscreen like COOLA, it should be the last step in your skin care regimen since it’s a physical sunblock.

2. Put down and walk away from the Clarisonic. That’s right I said it.  The Clarisonic is to be used only at night when you have makeup and daily grime to remove. Unless your fiancé licks your face while you’re sleeping, you don’t need any aggressive cleansers in the morning. If you continue to use your Clarisonic twice a day, you may end up stripping your skin and causing irritation. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser like Fresh Soy Face Cleanser ($38) which is super gentle and smells deliciously of cucumbers.

3.  Incorporate a brightening and/or energizing serum like Eminence Eight Greens Youth Serum ($42) which is a revitalizing serum for dehydrated and/or oily skin. Bonus: It’s specifically made for hormonal issues so if your two weeks fall within the dreaded PMS zone, this serum will help get your skin on track.

Evening

1. Nothing makes your skin look older than tight, dry skin. So after you cleanse, spoil your skin with a hydrating mask 2-3 times a week. Use a soothing, moisturizing mask like Caudalie Moisturizing Cream Mask ($40) which will help tight, dehydrated skin and quiet down any redness and irritation.

2. If you’re suffering from oily or congested skin, incorporate a mud treatment mask twice a week that will gently treat by absorbing impurities and controlling oil like Boscia Clarifying Detox Mask ($25). If your skin is suffering an identity crisis, meaning it’s both congested and dry, then apply the mask before your shower and remove once you get out of the shower. The steam will help the mask penetrate but won’t allow it to dry out your skin.

3. As I said in the last post, slather on the oil and the creams! My face is so greasy from products at night my husband kisses me good night on my neck to avoid being slimed. I wake up the next morning to plumped, hydrated skin. You, my fair bride, better be going to bed with a face full of product too or, you guessed it, I will hunt you down and cut your veil.

When Janna asked me to attend the North American launch of NVEY ECO, an organic makeup line founded and based in Australia, I was psyched!  I am yet to find an organic makeup line that has the texture and pigment I need as a makeup artist.  Having done some research before I attended the launch party, I discovered that the line was founded in 2005 with the expertise of Rohan Widdison whose mother Helen Abicair founded the acclaimed Melbourne Beauty College in 1958. Rohan has been director of the Helen Abicair Beauty college for the past 21 years.  With these credentials, I was sure this line was going to be flawless!
Much to my dismay, my flawless assumption was truely flawed…  I received two neutral colored eyeshadows and a lip gloss to take home with me.  I wanted to try out some of their eye-popping colors I had seen in the promotional materials so I could test the pigment factor.  I put in my requests with the publicist but the company was only able to send me more neutral colors.  I knew the only way to truly test the product would be to use it on a model, so I  began (of course) by getting her  moisturized, sunscreened and primed before applying any makeup (I know Janna is nodding in approval while reading this).

The first product I used was NVEY ECO’s Creme Deluxe Flawless Foundation in Nude ($60).  The first red flag was the texture, which was not a creme but more like a disk of frozen paste that I had to warm significantly with friction to have any product adhere to my brush.  Once it became more plyable, I spent more than 15 minutes blending it on my model’s skin (just to give you an idea, this normally would take me about 3 mins).  My model also commented that it felt sticky on her skin. Once I told her to stop bitching I saw that it did give good coverage, but I just don’t have enough time on set or in my personal life to consider using it again.

Next, I used NVEY ECO’s #3 Eye Shadow Palette – 5 Colour Collection ($75.95) which as I noted before contains all neutral, earth tone colors.  I found the eyeshadow texture okay but nothing remarkable, especially pigment-wise.  I next used NVEY ECO’s Volumising Black Mascara ($29.95) which gave very neutral coverage.  You will not get vampy or dramatic lashes as a result of using this mascara, so if you need a natural look and/or have sensitive eyes, this may be worth a shot.

Then I applied NVEY ECO Natural Nourishing Bronzer ($49.95) which was way too dark on my model’s pale skin, and being the lighter of their two bronzers, this was surprising to me.  After I removed some of the bronzer, I applied their Powder Blush in Blushing Rose ($29.95).  This had a nice soft color for the apples of my model’s cheeks, but it was nothing to write home about especially at $29.95 a pop.

I finished my model’s look with Advance Care Lip Color #373 ($29.95) ( a number is harder to remember than a name, NVEY ECO) which had a very similar consistency to the “creme” foundation, sticky and extremely difficult to apply.  The last product I used and probably the only NVEY ECO item I would buy was the Hydrating Lip Lustre in Oasis ($29.95).  This had a great texture and opalescent color which really showed off the lips.

In summary, I wouldn’t recommend any of NVEY ECO’s products, except perhaps the Hydrating Lip Lustre.  Their price point is too high for the quality when you can get organic brands such as Physician’s Formula Organic Wear  or Lavera for about half the price.

So as you can see there’s really nothing to “Nvey”.

Illamasqua Lipstick in Box ($24)

How did I discover it? Actually, I didn’t. My friend Jocelyn was over at the house, sipping wine (don’t worry… I had sparkling water but why should she be punished for my bun in the oven?) and raiding the beauty room.  I love introducing friends like Jocelyn (a makeup artist and lash extension stylist) to the beauty room because they actually appreciate the masses of makeup and skincare, and I love sharing it with them!  We were rapidly filling up Jocelyn’s beauty trick or treat bag when we started going through my hoards of makeup.  She took the top off of the Illamasqua lipstick and gave me a quizzical look. I shot her back a look like, “What??”

“Janna, you’ve never used this,” she said as she twisted the lipstick up.

“Um, there are a lot of lipsticks I haven’t used in this room, Jocelyn.”

“Yeah, but this one would look really good on you. Try this on now!” she demanded as she handed me the lipstick.

There was no good reason why I hadn’t tried it except for that I probably have at least 100 lipsticks (no exaggeration) in my beauty room and in various handbags. It’s tough getting through them all! #beautybloggerproblems

I swiped on the lipstick and looked in the mirror. “Wow,” I said to my reflection. Jocelyn was right (and she knew it based on the look on her face). It made my lips look pouty and was the perfect shade of red for my skin tone and eye and hair color. Jocelyn gave me a quick I told you so in the form of, “See! This is going to be your new color!” She’s right.

If you’re ready to get your sex kitten on… the lipstick is a long-lasting matte so make sure you exfoliate your lips first and apply a balm at least 10 minutes before applying.  But once you swipe on the lipstick you probably won’t have to touch up again for the night (unless of course you’re making out for hours on end because the lipstick makes you that irresistible).

This concealer is touted by Sephora as: An ultrahydrating crease-control concealer. Cover-up goes incognito. This moisturizing crease-control concealer with vitamin E and apple seed extract hides dark circles and diffuses fine lines for a silky smooth, ultranatural look. Available in three shades, it’s proven to keep skin hydrated for six hours and won’t cake, crease, or settle.

Right… the only thing this concealer “covered up” was my good shopping sense. It goes on greasy and shiny which brings more attention to my puffiness. I don’t consider myself someone to have intense dark circles or even medium dark circles but this grease-ball in a tube couldn’t conceal even the slightest darkness.  It has way too much moisturizer to do any sort of concealing.  To put it bluntly, this product sucks.  Spend the extra 5 seconds and put on an eye cream before applying a quality concealer like Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer Fair Golden ($42) or Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer ($70) which may be pricey but should last you for at least a year (if it doesn’t you’re applying way too much product!).
