Makeup Meltdown Mayhem! Battle the Heat with a Few Tricks and Tools

I can’t get over this f’ing heat!  Okay, I know I just wrote about a melt-proof eye, but with this ungodly heat you’re going to need more than just a waterproof eyeshadow stick.   We’re officially in crisis lock-down mode.  When my husband and I traveled to Columbus, Ohio this past week for the 4th, I was genuinely traumatized (and I hate to admit it but visibly sweating, gross!) by the humid 97 degree conditions.  We went to my 20th high school reunion (yes, I’m old) at around 7 pm and I was a disaster by 7:07 (and by disaster I mean fellow classmates were picking little pieces of napkin off my sticky face because I was couldn’t stop blotting with taco truck napkins).  BUT despite the Vietnam-like conditions, guess what?? MY MAKEUP ENDURED!

Follow these easy steps to heat-proof your makeup:

1. Prep: You want to minimize your skincare steps to avoid piling on multiple layers of product.   Switch out your usual moisturizer for a multi-tasking oil-free tinted moisturizer like NARS ‘Pure Radiant’ Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($42).

2SPF: Even though tinted moisturizer has SPF, don’t expect it to give you enough protection (keep in mind you’re supposed to use a nickel size of SPF for your face). Avoid the usual SPF shine by applying a mattifying SPF like COOLA – Face SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Cucumber Matte Finish ($26).

3. Primer: I know I sound like a broken record but PRIMER IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!  Primer provides a barrier between your skin and makeup and helps the makeup adhere and last longer.  For oily skin I recommend Cover FX Clearprep FX Matte Foundation Primer and Anti-Acne Treatment 1 oz ($39), for normal skin I like Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional The POREfessional  ($29), and  for dry skin try  Amazing Cosmetics Anti Aging Face Primer ($34).

4. Conceal:  In the unbearable heat I have to cast aside my two favorite concealers (Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer Fair ($42) and Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer Ivory ($70)) and bring in the big guns —  Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit ($33).  The kit includes a thick concealer (so yes, apply sparingly!) that instantly covers uglies like dark circles, redness, blemishes, etc and a genius setting powder that will keep your concealer lasting through the longest of schvitz sessions.

5.  Eyes: Make sure you use primer or powder foundation on your lids first, then use a waterproof  eyeliner like SEPHORA COLLECTION Kohl Waterproof Eyeliner 03 Keep Brown ($9) to define the eye.  You can attempt powder shadows but I’m not promising they’ll still be there by the end of the night.

6. Cheeks: Skip the powder blushes which can get messy and cakey and forgo the cream blushes which will disappear faster than my husband when I’m watching “Real Housewives of New York.”  Try using a cheek stain like Tarte Cheek Stain ($30) which will last the longest and give you the most natural look.

7.  Lips: Skip the waxy lipsticks and sticky glosses, both of which will melt pretty quickly and opt for a chubby lip stain pencil like Tarte LipSurgence ($24) which will double duty as a pencil and lip color,  last for hours and keep your lips hydrated.

Now if you find you’re stuck in a midday melt, don’t panic!! Blot and remove oil with Clean & Clear Instant Oil-Absorbing Sheets ($5) and then pat on your mattifying primer (yes, over your makeup) to remove any shine.  I also always have an Evian Spray ($20 for 3) with me for instant cool downs that won’t wash away my makeup. And don’t forget, blotting with cheap taco truck napkins means people will either be picking napkin pieces off your face all night or laughing at you (or both).
