Makeup Tutorial: 8 Easy Steps to Creating Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Makeup

Step 1: After moisturizing, prime your face with Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer ($30), giving enlarged pores special attention with extra primer.  With a foundation brush or your fingers, apply Clown White Lite Makeup  ($5.27) all over your face from your hairline to your chin and jawline.  Leave your eye sockets and tip of your nose uncovered since the white dilutes the color of the makeup. Then, set the cream makeup with Graftobian Pro Setting Powder ($9.99) by rolling a large powder brush across your face (do not rub, brush as usual, or blot since it will take the cream makeup off with it) and clean up any brush marks by lightly patting with your fingertips.

Step 2: Draw a line around your eye socket in a rounded squarish shape with a black waterproof eye pencil like SEPHORA COLLECTION Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner ($12), and then use the eyeliner on the eye cuticle (inner eye).  Fill in shape with a waterproof cream shadow like MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow  ($23),  ensuring you get as close as possible to both your upper and lower lash lines (you don't want any skin showing!).  Then to get that long-lasting inky matte black look, press in a matte black powder shadow like MAC Eyeshadow in Carbon ($15) with a shader brush like MAC 239 Eye Shading Brush ($25).

Step 3: To add a little extra dimension to the blue, you'll notice I used two different shades to make the look really pop. I started by lining along the black ring with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Deviant ($19) and then drew an outer ring with the same liner  from just above my eyebrows to the middle of my cheek and around the eye.  Then, I filled in the shape with SEPHORA COLLECTION Jumbo Liner 12HR Wear Waterproof in Turquoise ($12) and set it with the shader brush and Kryolan UV Blacklight Reactive Pressed Powder Eye Shadow in BLUE ($12.95) to give the look an extra creepy effect!

Step 4: To make the petals around the eyes use a black waterproof liner pencil like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Perversion ($19) to draw small loops all the way around the blue ring, and then fill in loops with a red lipstick liner pencil like SEPHORA COLLECTION Retractable Waterproof Lip Liner in Scarlet ($12). Then, to make the petals stand out, go over the black lines with a waterproof liquid liner like Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion  ($19.00).

Step 5:  You want to make a spade-like shape on your nose by drawing an upside-down heart with the  Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion ($19) and draw a little stem at the bottom.  Fill in spade with MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow  ($23), and then set with MAC Eyeshadow in Carbon ($15).   

Step 6:  For the spiderweb, with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion ($19) draw five lines (like in the picture) and then connect them with upside-down arches.  Then draw a spade (like the one on your nose) where the lines meet.  Fill in the spade with MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow  ($23), and then set with MAC Eyeshadow in Carbon ($15).    

Step 7:  To draw the rose, use the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion  and create the outline of the rose (look at pic for guidance) and then fill in rose with SEPHORA COLLECTION Retractable Waterproof Lip Liner in Scarlet. To make your rose stand out, go over black lines with Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion.  To make leaves on each side of the rose, use your Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion to draw the outline of the leaves and then fill in leaves with Jesse's Girl Eyeliner in Poison Ivy ($1.99).

Step 8: For your mouth, use your Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion to draw a horizontal line from the center of your lips that curve up with your jawline on both sides of your mouth (check pic for reference).  Then make vertical lines starting at the center of your lips that gradually get smaller as they get further from your lips. Again, to make the lines pop, use your Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion to go over all the black lines

Spray your face with Urban Decay All Nighter XL Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray ($27.95) to lock in the makeup for the night and throw away the key. Voila!
