My New 5-Minute Makeup Routine!

Now that I have a baby girl, the days of me turning my makeup application process into a long, enjoyable ritual — taking an hour to carefully plan and execute the perfect smoky eye or shadowed winged eye while downing a couple glasses of chardonnay — are long gone.  Now, I’m lucky to have five minutes before my husband is calling me to the door.

People who aren’t true makeup lovers never understood how it could take me so long to get ready… It was never that I felt naked or ugly without a full face of makeup or that I’m so vain that I needed 60 minutes to perfect my face… I actually relished the process. It was almost a form of meditation for me.

I’ve found that even though I can’t take the time to create new dramatic makeup looks (and let’s face it, my social schedule isn’t quite demanding cat eyes and electric fuchsia lipstick), I enjoy the fact that I’ve been able to whittle down my routine significantly, still be pleased with the final product, and even get in 5 minutes of my own personal meditation:

After priming (NEVER OMIT PRIMER OR YOUR MAKEUP WILL SEEP INTO YOUR PORES AND FINE LINES – NO BUENO!) with Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting PrimerI apply AMOREPACIFIC ‘Time Response’ Skin Renewal Foundation SPF 18  in 102 by dotting my cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and blend out with my fingers. Then, I lightly spray my makeup sponge with rose water and blot to blend.  No matter how many bb creams and foundations I try, I always go back to this one.  It’s totally pricey at $90 but wow is it worth it.  It smooths on seamlessly and manages to cover my redness and imperfections without being heavy. It makes my skin look airbrushed, leaving a subtle glow. I also love the hygienic dispenser, which only releases a small amount of product, ensuring I don’t contaminate the makeup and that a bottle lasts me at least 6 months.

– Next, I cover up the darkness and puffiness under my eyes by tapping on my go-to concealer Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer in beige. Yes, it’s another pricey item, but guess what, I’m still using the same stick I bought 2 years ago. That’s right. 2 years. A very tiny amount goes a mile. I also apply a little bit of concealer to my eyelids to act as a primer.

– If I’m going for a casual night out look, I will cover my entire upper eye area with a cream or flesh-colored matte eye shadow like Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow Ivory with a flat eye shadow brush.  Then, I will use a domed contour eye brush to swipe a matte brown like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Buck  in my creases in a back and forth windshield wiper motion.  Matte brown eye shadow in the creases makes eyes appear instantly larger! Then I blend to soften any lines with a loose eye brush in small circles.

– Next, I’ll quickly swipe on long-lasting waterproof eyeliner in brown like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Bourbon .

– Now, if I’m going “out, out” like to a party or venue where a sultry smoky eye is practically required, I will simply line my upper lash line with a NARS ‘Soft Touch’ Shadow Pencil in Dark Rite  and blend upwards towards my crease with my ring finger.  Then I will line my lower lash line with the shadow pencil and smudge. Voila! Instant smoky eye!  Tip: These shadow pencils set quickly so don’t dawdle when blending.

– You’ll notice I’m skipping mascara in both these looks and that’s because I have lash extensions. If you don’t have extensions, be sure to apply 2-3 coats of your favorite defining, volume-building mascara.

– On to the face… I’ll quickly contour my face by swiping Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronze – Perfect Tan Tantric underneath my cheekbones to my temples, along my hairline and jawline. By the way… the Marc Jacobs bronzer is by far the best, the most natural-looking bronzer I’ve tried to date. Don’t be fooled by the color in the photo. It definitely doesn’t apply as dark as it looks.

– Now, to add a little flush to my cheeks I’ll tap on Tarte Cheek Stain in Tipsy  to the apples of my cheeks and blend circularly and then upwards to my temples for an extra lift. Tip: Stay away from powder blushes in the winter. They will just bring more attention to dry skin and make your skin look flat and dull.

– For my pucker, if I’m wearing the first look (brown matte eye makeup) I will add a pop of color on my lips with Bite Beauty High Pigment Matte Pencil in Tannin.  I love these pencils because they are pencils and lip color in one step. They give HUGE color without drying my lips. Ladies, I’m telling you… Bite Beauty continues to impress me with their lip products. Whether we’re talking lipstick, lip pencils, or lip primers, Bite Beauty by far get my gold star for best lip products.

– If I’m wearing a dramatic smoky eye, then I’ll opt for a creamy, long-lasting nude lip  like Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream in Napa.

VOILA! 5 minutes later my makeup is done and I’ve dodged another tedious lecture from my husband about being on time. Of course at this point I probably can’t find my phone and we won’t leave for another 20 minutes. Baby steps…

    Hi Janna,

I think I’m finally gonna take your advice and get a primer. However, I am a little concerned about the silicone in tartes version. Years ago I tried the smash box primer and broke out like crazy. I’m curious to hear your take and if I should try another one.
Thanks in advance and cognates on your gorgeous daughter.

Nevermind. Just saw that they also make a silicone-free version.
And of course, I meant congrats, not cognates on your baby girl.

Ha! I was just going to respond. Yes, try the Tarte silicone-free primer and let me know what you think. If you don’t like it I will give you a couple others to try. xoxo
