Product Review: Coola Face SPF 30 Matte Finish Cucumber

It’s hard for me to get excited about SPF. As long as the SPF does it’s job without making my skin shiny or angry I’m fine with it (I won’t mention any names here but there’s an extremely popular European SPF that gave my skin armies of red bumps).  Since NEUTROGENA ULTRA SHEER SUNBLOCK SPF 30 ($12.99) costs about $10 I’ve never been tempted to try the more expensive brands.  Until… (you knew there was an “until” coming) I tried Coola!  It’s a mineral-based,  chemical-free SPF cream with a unique  waterless texture.  (By the way, according to Coola, because of the cream’s waterless consistency, bacteria cannot form.  Added bonus!)

I discovered Coola after a delicious facial at The Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara.  My esthetician Shellie asked me if she could apply SPF. You would think “yes” would be the automatic answer, but in fact I’ve had some bad reactions by applying SPF over rich post-facial serums and creams.  Shellie watched me hesitate, “Don’t worry.  It’s really gentle and light, and feels great on.”  I had too much daylight left in the day to turn her down.  As Shellie applied the cream, it felt as though it was evaporating after a few seconds.  Very cool.

I got back to the locker room and rushed to the mirror to discover that my face looked matte with a diffused glow (Coola delivered the “diffused” and the fabulous facial gave the “glow”).  On closer inspection, my lines and pores looked smoothed and airbrushed. Genius! It’s an SPF and primer in one!   I was eager to give Coola the true test: the back of my hand comparison I perform with all potential primers by swiping the primer on the back of one hand and comparing it to the other to see if the primer makes it look less liney and uneven.

I went out to reception and applied a dollop of the COOLA – Face SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Cucumber Matte Finish($36) since that’s what Shellie had used on me. As I rubbed in the thin white cream,  it quickly transformed to a dry satiny consistency.   Typical of a mineral SPF, Coola starts out white but disappears into my skin leaving a matte finish. I put the two hands side-by-side… Gorgeous!

The Coola not only eliminates my use of primer on a no-makeup day (sorry, Bare Escentuals Prime Time), but it also has a ton of healing, anti-aging and hydrating all-organic ingredients like  primrose, shea butter and cucumber.  I’m in love!  And who says I can’t get excited about SPF??
