Skin Regimen for the Non-Girly Girly

My friend Kelsey is one of those All-American girls — blond hair, blue eyes, light freckles on her nose, and a kick-ass body that makes you want to hate her (she’s a total cyborg athlete). But you can’t really hate her because she has no clue she looks like she just stepped out of an American Eagle ad (See left photo. No, that’s not Kelsey nor is that her husband Jordan. I’m just trying to make a point!)

She grew up with brothers (also cyborgs, taking after cyborg mom and dad) and spent her youth excelling at every sport including becoming a scratch golfer rather than playing with Barbies and raiding her mother’s makeup bag (wasted childhood, obviously).

Kels and I were at dinner. I was busy examining her makeup-free skin (I won’t lie, a little hate brewed. She may have had on lip balm, but that’s it.) when she turned to me and said, “Janna, I love the blog and all, but I don’t really get all that girly-girl stuff.” I could tell by the look on her face I must have looked wounded, especially since she quickly followed up with, “Not that it’s girly-girl! I just don’t use a lot of product!”

Tell me something I don’t know.

“Kels, I’m not offended. Really. I guess the blog is pretty girly-girl.” The food came and the conversation shifted to my pending move to California. Later in the meal, Kelsey turns to me and said, “Listen, I know I’m not into all that beauty stuff, but I do need to start using some sort of anti-aging skincare. I just don’t know where to start.”

I closed my eyes, nodded my head, I could hardly contain myself I was so pleased to hear those words come out of her mouth. Like a proud parent, I put my arm around her and said, “I think I can help.”

Cleanse: It’s all about the cleansing cloths. Almost every skincare line from discount drugstore to premium, has a version of these little miracle cloths. There are different cloths for every skin condition and concern, and many of them multi-task, which is why they are perfect for Kelsey. I am going to suggest she buys Soap & Glory Off Your Face Wipes Cleansing Cloths ($10) to keep in her bag at all times (she’s always involved in some sort of sport or outdoor activity). These cloths are touted for their “3-in-1” powerhouse — cleansing, moisturizing, and pore-minimizing. I like that the cloths utilize Glycerin for the moisture (safe on sensitive skin) and natural ingredients like Chamomile and Mint.

Face Moisturizer: I know I’m adding an extra step here and I’m risking chasing Kelsey away, but I’m going to take my chances. Normally, I would suggest First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Face Cream SPF 30  ($38) because it’s a multi-tasking superstar and tends to be a great fit for several skin types. But, I know that Kelsey uses a good SPF every day, which gives her some moisturizing and antioxidant benefits, so I’m not going to push the issue. Instead, I will try and infiltrate her nightly routine with a nourishing night cream. I’m thinking Aveeno Positively Ageless Reconditioning Night Cream ($15.59), which has all-natural anti-agers like Aveeno’s proprietary Natural Shitake Complex. It’s also hyper-allergenic, and appropriate for many different skin types and maturity. Across the board, when I speak to women who use this cream, whether they are in their 20s or 40s, they rave about how much brighter their skin looks after a few weeks of use.

Eye Cream: I am going to have to insist Kelsey invests in a good eye cream. Her active lifestyle means she’s always out in the sun and even the highest SPF can’t shield all damage. One of my favorites is  Rodan + Fields Anti-Age Multi-Function Eye Cream ($59). Created by the dermatologists behind Proactiv Skin Care, it’s incredibly rich and hydrating without being dense or greasy. It has powerful peptides that help “reduce the appearance of both puffiness and dark under eye circles while special optical diffusers instantly brighten the eye area.”

We’ll have to check back in with Kelsey a month from now and see if she listened to me on any of the above, and hopefully I didn’t lose her at “Cleanse.” You never know, a year from now Kels may be a total skincare junkie, sharing favorite products with me! A girl can dream…
