Spa Slut: Mzia Shiman Spa in NYC

I heard about Mzia Shiman Spa via GiltCity. While other flash sites like Groupon and Lifebooker can be a bit of a crap-shoot (50% off a facial at a nail salon that calls itself a spa isn’t such a great deal), GiltCity has always been discerning when it comes to choosing spas partners.  They take the class up a notch by offering deals from elite spas like The PeninsulaTrump Soho, and Bliss.  I saw the deal for the Mzia Shiman Spa back in January offering a 60-minute facial and 30-minute reflexology treatment for $150 (usually $300) and thought I should give it  a try.  (To be honest, when any spa offers 50% off  on GiltCity, I tend to do little thinking and just click “buy”. I’m yet to be disappointed and the vouchers go quickly.)

Once I did my research to prep for my appointment  I was a little put off by the bare bones website — no photos, no prices, and very little information.  I didn’t let it get to me, since I knew GiltCity would never let me down.  After further research, I did find that Allure Magazine had named Mzia Shiman a “Skin Whisperer” and that she’s done facials for the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kirsten Dunst, and Dylan Lauren.  I let out a sigh of relief and quickly made my appointment.

I got to the spa (in an office building on Fifth Avenue) and was greeted by a friendly receptionist sitting behind an gorgeous desk adorned with candy jars and antiquities.   Behind her desk was a stunning armoire filled with beauty products.  Everything about this spa makes you feel like you’re at a spa party for a wealthy Upper East Side friend.  The furniture all comes from Lauren Home (Mzia says that Dylan Lauren is like a daughter to her, after years of facials), and each esthetician customizes their room with tasteful personal touches.

My esthetician, Ellza Bellezza (who customized her room with little statues, crystals, and an hourglass), immediately welcomed me with a warm hug.  Once I was snug in my treatment bed and Ellza began working her magic, I completely understood the high price tag.  Not only is Ellza knowledgeable when it comes to skincare and product (imagine that, she actually listened to me when I said I had sensitive skin), but she truly  has healing hands. Ellza gave me the most gentle extractions I’ve ever had in my life,  and more importantly, she made me leave there feeling like I was walking on a cloud. As a master of both Reiki and Reflexology, Ellza brings something completely unique to the treatment table. During Reflexology she was able to identify and lessen the tension in my shoulders and back.  When she heard I am trying to get pregnant, she immediately massaged oils on my abdomen and did some energy work on my meridians.

When my 90 minutes were up, I looked in the mirror and my skin was literally glowing. You would have never been able to detect that I had even one extraction. Ellza introduced me to Mzia, who was absolutely lovely, and we talked about everything from celebrities to Intraceuticals facials (obviously I’m a huge fan).     But, even though Mzia and I bonded, and it’s painfully hard for me to turn down an Intraceuticals facial, I’m all about Ellza.   This may sound dramatic, but my 90 minutes with her had a profound affect on both my skin and my stress level.  She truly is a healer, in every way.
