Now that all the shows are over and I’ve exhaustively criticized the “No Makeup Look” and other awful trends, it’s time for me to focus on the positive (yes, I’m capable) and choose the most wearable, flattering trends from all the shows. And, with a little help from celebrity makeup artist Charlie Green, help you achieve these looks at home:
Matte Lips: This look made a star appearance at the London shows, rocking the runways of the likes of Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, and then encored at the Milan and Paris shows (Moschino, Prada, Gaultier). A bold matte lip is perfect for dressing up a minimal face (luminous skin and a touch of mascara) and can easily be achieve by following Charlie’s instruction:
Finally the end of the ubiquitous oily mouth! I love a cleverly crafted strong lip and its easy to do with a great lip brush. Always ensure lips are free of lip balm before applying color, as the grease causes slippage. Dust a little translucent powder around lip perimeter to prevent the color from bleeding, then apply one coat of lipstick (like NARS Mascate Pure Matte Lipstick $25 or Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color $24), blot, and apply second coat.
Brooke Shields Eyebrows: I’m not talking about the crazy-ass Warlock brows we saw at Marc Jacobs, more so the naturally wild brows we saw gracing the runways at almost every show. Ladies, you don’t have to go full-on overgrown brows here but DO keep in mind those pencil thin brows make you look older! Now before Charlie bestows her knowledge, I can give you one of my own tips — take a disposable mascara wand (you can buy them at beauty supply stores or just grab a few from Sephora), spray it with hair spray, and then brush your brows back-and-forth and then upwards. Voila! Now a little love from Charlie on how to get those wild child brows:
Immediately start growing out overly-tweezed brows!! My secret to creating fuller brows is to always have a couple of shades of brow pencil in your kit. No matter your hair color, use a blonde or pale shade (like Dior Powder Eyebrow Pencil in Blond $29) to sketch out the desired shape and fullness. Then, use a slightly deeper mid tone color (like MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Taupe $19) to strengthen the effect.
Pigment-Saturated Eye Makeup: Nothing makes you look more ready for a night of debauchery than a bright pop of color on your eyes. Whether you completely cover you lids (like at Monique Lhuillier, shown in photo below) or just add a bright liner (like we saw at Stella McCartney), a little color instantly gives you a little drama:
Yeah!! Another hot fave of mine is a splash of color on the eye. If bright eyeshadow (like MAC Pigment Full Force Violet $21) or popping cream eyeshadow (like MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Cream in Intense Blue $23) scares you off, instead try a slick of an eye pencil in a fab color (like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Binge $19) pressed close to the lash line instead of all over lid. Or, using a soft spongey applicator dab some colour eyeshadow under the eye to lift your usual eye makeup look. Also experiment with color mascaras (like SEPHORA COLLECTION Full Action Extreme Effect Mascara in Purple $15). Think of it as a new accessory for the season!
Wine-hued Lips: This is by far my favorite trend for its sexiness and wearability on all skin types. I immediately adopted it into my usual routine (and by ‘usual’ I mean usual ‘going out’ routine. I’m not sporting a dark berry lip to the grocery store and yoga class, at least not yet):
Sexy lips looking like you have been guzzling merlot can be created by using a berry lip pencil (like Lancome ‘Le Crayon’ Lip Contour Berry $23.50) all over the mouth and not just the perimeter. This pencil undercoat will intensify the lip color and also help it last longer. Then, with a lip brush apply lipstick (like Lipstick Queen ‘Sinner’ Lipstick Berry $20), blot, and then apply a second coat. Don’t forget to apply extra blush to the apples of your cheeks so you don’t look like a Twilight extra!!
